Sapporo, Japan

Message from the Director

Jason Barrows, BCA Director - Japan

I appreciate your interest in the BCA program at Sapporo, Japan. I hope that you are as excited about this cultural experience as I am.

My name is Jason Barrows.  I am the Program Director here in Sapporo.  I have been enjoying this exciting opportunity to learn, investigate, exchange and explore Japanese culture and language and look forward to sharing this experience with you.  I've been living here in Sapporo for over 8 years and personally have learned a lot about this rich culture. I hope I can be helpful in making your learning experience and stay in Japan enjoyable and fruitful.

I enjoy living here in Sapporo very much.  Sapporo is a lively city of nearly two million people and an easy city to live in because of its wide streets and parks, excellent transportation system and safety.  Sapporo is a cosmopolitan community, the site of the 1972 Winter Olympic Games, and hosts the world-famous international Snow Festival each February.

Hokusei Gakuen University will provide you with the opportunity to learn more about Japan in the classroom while you actually experience the culture outside of classes.  The University staff is friendly, helpful, and highly competent. Whatever your language ability is when you arrive, it will be strengthened during your stay both through language study and because you will have the whole country as your language lab.  Living with a Japanese family will also enhance your language skills as you will acquire additional cultural and coping skills with your experiences.

Immediately before the term starts, we will take a study tour throughout Japan as an introduction to Japanese culture and history.  We will encounter the old, traditional Japan of Kyoto and Nara and marvel at the rebuilt Japan in Hiroshima.  Hokusei will offer additional excursions and cultural opportunities throughout the term.  I will be here to help you have a contact point with your own culture and to help you fit your Japan program into that of your school in the United States.

I am pleased to hear of your interest in Japan and in BCA, and we believe you will find your life in Japan to be different, exciting, challenging, and, ultimately, rewarding.  I will be most happy to respond to any questions.

Sincerely,
Jason Barrows
BCA Director - Japan
