Pondicherry, India

Message from the Director

Surabhi Lal

Dear Prospective BCA-India Student,

Whether you choose to study social work, marine science or aquaculture, India will provide you with an experience like no other.  The BCA India program offers a chance to immerse yourself in your discipline, travel in India, meet local community members and researchers, as well as other BCA students from the different programs.

India is a fascinating country with its many languages, cultures, and festivals.  In your time here you may travel to a small coastal village to interact with local fish farmers, or find yourself working with an NGO that works on welfare issues, or observing and counting fish near the coral reefs.   In India you have the choice of visiting mountains or oceans, temples or churches, rainforests or deserts.  BCA India students in the social work and aquaculture programs will study in Mangalore, while the marine and environmental science students will call Pondicherry their home base.

Mangalore is a true university town that lies on the Arabian Sea and boasts lush greenery, sloping tiled roofs, and a diverse population.  Students studying social work will take courses at Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work and complete their fieldwork at a local NGO or community agency.  The College of Fisheries will host BCA students interested in aquaculture where students will have plenty of opportunities to work with the surrounding community with the college’s extension programs.  Students in these programs will enjoy visits to other areas on the western coast to see temples, palaces, and beaches.

Students studying in the environmental/marine science program will be based near Pondicherry at FERAL, an environmental research and advocacy NGO.  Pondicherry, on the southeastern coast of India, is a former French colony where one can still see the French influences on architecture, food, and culture.  Students will learn field research methods, carry out a group research project, and contribute to long-term data collection projects while traveling to different sites in India.  Students will have an opportunity to see both the eastern and western coasts of India and even see some underwater sights.

Whichever program you choose, India will fascinate and challenge you.  The BCA India team will be here to help you on your journey whether it is translating the menu at dinner, to navigating the rail system, to helping you connect with the local community.  If you have any questions about BCA India, please do not hesitate to contact me at india.bca@gmail.com

I look forward to seeing you in India!

Sincerely,
Surabhi Lal
