In the Study Tour Covering Fisheries Activities of the State class (RFWEP.406) professors will lead students on a two-week tour through different parts of India, visiting hatcheries, aquaculture farms, fish processing factories, fishing harbors and fishing markets, in addition to stopping at central and state government organizations that have worked with fisheries and research stations.

This course provides BCA students an excellent overview of India’s approach to developing and maintaining productive fisheries. Similarly, students benefit from courses in Marine Biology (FEE.201), General Oceanography (FEE.202), and Aquatic Pollution (FEE.203) as they learn of India’s unique ecosystem and its approach to protecting it.

Faculty Experts on Staff

Dr. P. Keshavanath, Former Dean and Campus Head, College of Fisheries, Mangalore (KVAFS University), India.

Dr. Keshavanath is an expert in the areas of aquaculture, fish nutrition and breeding. He has recently retired after 33 years of service at the College of Fisheries, Mangalore (Constituent College of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar). Starting as Instructor, he rose to the position of Director of Instruction, Dean and Campus Head. In addition to valuable contributions in teaching, research and extension he has guided several students in
their postgraduate programs.


He obtained his PhD degree from Delhi University followed by six months of post-doctoral research at the University of Stirling, United Kingdom with funding from the British Council. A strong believer in international education and research, he has been awarded short time research assignments in Thailand, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and Brazil funded by different agencies. His research has allowed him to visit several countries to present research papers at international symposia and seminars. He is widely published with over 100 publications in standard national and international journals. Dr. Keshavanath has served on several academic bodies of various universities, scientific committees at the state and national levels and as Secretary, Asian Fisheries Society, Indian Branch, for two terms. He has also
organized workshops and training programs for national and international organizations.

Anupama Pai, Managing Director, FERAL, Pondicherry, India

With a background in ecology, Anupama Pai has several years experience in research and has been involved primarily in projects that deal with community involvement, capacity building and training in the area of natural resource management. In recent years, her responsibilities have focused on developing the education and training component of the organization by initiating programs and building new partnerships. In addition, She is associated with FERAL’s gender
development initiative and in bringing an entrepreneurial focus into this program.

As Managing Director of FERAL, Anupama Pai is also responsible for the overall functioning, administration,grant-raising and vision-building for FERAL. She lives on-site at the research center and has hosted several international research teams at FERAL.FERAL is a non-profit trust based in Pondicherry, India, that was formed on the 22nd of July 1997 with a mandate for research and intervention in the areas of natural resource management, conservation and environmental monitoring. Current funding partners include the Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology, United Nations Development Fund, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, UNESCO, and BCA’s study abroad program


Neil Pelkey, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Studies and Information Technology, Juniata College


Professor Pelkey joined the Juniata College faculty in 2002 as an assistant professor of environmental science and information technology. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from the University of California-Davis and went on to earn a doctorate in ecology from the same institution. He has taught courses in environmental science and engineering, stream channel mapping, spatial statistics, animal ecology, GIS and remote sensing, and information technology. He is currently designing and implementing a modular course in bioinformatics that will be based on a just-in-time teaching philosophy.

Pelkey started his academic career in 1998 as a postdoctoral researcher at UC-Davis where he studied collaborative governance efforts in of more than 70 watersheds in Washington and California. In 2000, he served as a lecturer at UC-Davis and taught the research methods course. He was named Brown Faculty Fellow at the University of the South's Landscape Analysis Lab in 2001. In conjunction with Bill Leach, he received the award for Theoretical Paper of the Year from the American Water Resources Association. He is published in professional journals such as Water Resources Planning and Management, Biological Conservation, African Journal of Ecology and Conservation Biology. He has also presented at national conferences sponsored by the American Political Science Association, the Northeast Fish and Wildlife Federation, The American Public Policy and Management Association, and the Society for Conservation Biology. He has received research grants in collaboration with other fine researchers from such agencies as the India Canada Environment Facility, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
He was one of the founders of the Foundation for Ecological Research, Advocacy and Learning (FERAL) and is currently on the Board of Directors of FERAL.
