Message from the Director
As a participant of the BCA program in Dalian, you will have an extraordinary opportunity to study and witness up close some of the momentous shifts that are taking place in China today. In particular, Dalian is an excellent study site because it is a city that in recent years has become a focal point in the central government's economic reform strategy. Dalian is the linchpin of the Chinese government's efforts to revitalize the northeastern region of the country, often referred to as the rustbelt of China because of the dramatic decline of the heavy industrial sector since 1978. Together, we will be able to experience and study this dramatic transformation of Dalian and pose and discuss larger questions related to the impact of the reforms on Chinese society and culture.
China's uniqueness makes it a nation of utmost significance in the world. It is a developing nation with few peers: it is large, populous, and rising fast as a world economic powerhouse. China's political importance is undeniable: it plays a central role in the Asian region, possesses growing military capabilities, and is one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Furthermore, China commands a level of attention and interest from a plethora of groups in the United States that simply is not given many other nations: human rights groups, business interests, humanitarian organizations, political activists, academics, and political interest groups.
I have over 12 years of experience studying and living in China and I look forward to being a resource for you during your time in China. I look forward to traveling with you, introducing you to all sorts of wonderful Chinese cuisine, and helping you to deepen your understanding of this country!
