Trips & Activities
One of the benefits of studying abroad with BCA is the excursions offered throughout the semester included in the program fee. If you can’t join the group for an excursion, please notify the resident director in advance so that they do not make unnecessary bookings.
Excursions often change from year to year, but past BCA students have enjoyed the following day trips:
- Stonehenge and Salisbury
- Bath (usually during orientation)
- The Cotswolds
- Blenheim Palace and Oxford
- Cardiff: Millennium stadium and castle
- Warwick Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon
Student Experiences
Cardiff, Wales Excursion
Student Name: David Aumack, Messiah College, Fall 2007
Description: One of my most memorable excursions that my friends and I took was a
day trip to Cardiff, the capital of Wales. We hopped on a train at Cheltenham Spa and arrived in Cardiff an hour later. First, we went to go visit Millennium Stadium where they host a variety of events such as motorsports and concerts, as well as rugby and football "soccer" games. It'll also be one of the hosts for the 2012 Summer Olympics. During our tour, the guide showed us into the Royal Box. This is where royalty spectate during the games. In the Royal Box we all got a chance to hold the Rugby World Cup!!! Afterwards we explored Cardiff Castle and its nearby tower. I thought Cardiff Castle was the most beautiful castle I saw while in Great Britain, displaying one room made entirely out of gold! Then as night drew near we all walked around a nearby park close to the river, perused the downtown shops, and headed back to Cheltenham to call it a day.
Space (Newspaper)
Student Name: Christopher Shannon, Juniata College, Fall 2008
Organization: Space (University of Gloucestershire student newspaper)
Contact Information: http://www.yourstudentsunion.com/space
Description: I took photos at student events at the University of Gloucestershire. It was a fun extracurricular activity that allowed me to expand my portfolio. Below are a few examples of photos that I took for Space. These galleries can be found on the University of Gloucestershire Student Union's website:
Cheltenham Townhouse F.C.
Student Name: Sara Olson, Manchester College, Spring 2009
Organization: Cheltenham Townhouse F.C.
Contact Information: http://www.cheltenhamtownladies-fc.moonfruit.co.uk/
Description: I joined a local soccer or "football" team while studying abroad. It was not affiliated with the school, but I heard of the team due to the popularity of the men's team. From being able to join the team, I learned how to adjust to a new style of playing and to new training techniques and methods. Joining the team also allowed me to meet more locals, learn British slang, and hear about their opinions on social matters such as news and celebrity drama. Overall, it just helped me feel more at ease and more connected. I was able to train with the team and even participate in the matches.
University Tennis Team
Student Name: Jordan Rothrock, McPherson College, Fall 2008
Organization: University Tennis Team
Description: I played on the University tennis team, which was one of my best decisions. It was more about the camaraderie of my fellow teammates than actually winning. We practiced twice a week and had matches twice a week, so I even got to travel with the team. By doing this I got to see more of England and even Wales. My teammates became some of my closest friends while I was there. Every Wednesday night we had tennis socials and met at a pub and there was always a crazy dress theme like Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles or Golfers. By joining this group I was fully integrated into the English culture and really got to experience what it was like to be a University student in their country. The university offers many options to get involved and I would definitely encourage everyone to join some sort of organization while they are over there.
