The Ron Moffatt Seminar on International Education – Peace, Justice and The Development of Global Civil Society
June 13-20, 2009
Ballyvaughan, Ireland
- In honor of former NAFSA President Ron Moffatt.
- Co-sponsored by Burren College of Art
Before his death in the spring of 2008, Ron had been one of the principal individuals who had been concerned with developing a peace and justice agenda for the international education community. As such, he was one of the key figures behind the 2007 seminar on "The Future of International Education: Peace, Justice, and the Development of Global Civil Society" that was held in the picturesque village of Ballyvaughan on Galway Bay in the west of Ireland. In order to further his work and to honor it, BCA will hold annual seminars in Ron’s name on this topic for the next several years in Ballyvaughan, a place he came to love during his stay there.
Although there will be walking tours in the beautiful Burren region which surrounds Ballyvaughan, as well as short excursions to other points of interest including the Cliffs of Moher, Corcomroe Abbey, and the Aillwee Caves, the principal activity of the seminar will be an intensive focus on the future of international education.
Details of the seminar
BCA’s International Seminar on the Future of International Education is being offered in association with the Burren College of Art. In addition to a small number of commentators with extensive international experience relevant to our discussions, all participants will be expected to contribute their own insights and reflections so that we can help to build a sound intellectual and academic foundation for international education initiatives that will contribute to the development of a peaceful and just global civil society.
Space is limited to no more than 20 other participants who should apply according to the instructions on the overleaf.

The Burren landscape’s pavement is rich in geological and botanical significance.
The seminar will commence on Saturday evening with a welcome reception hosted by the Burren College of Art in Newtown Castle which is on the college grounds. Seminar sessions will be held each day of the week with walking tours and excursions scheduled for the afternoons and early evenings depending upon the weather. A farewell banquet will be held on Friday evening, the 19th, and participants will depart on the morning of Saturday, 20 June.
Accomodation, meals and fees
Participants will be accommodated in single rooms in the cluster of thatched cottages that sit on the edge of Galway Bay close to the center of the village (see photo overleaf). Breakfast, the welcome reception, and the farewell banquet, as well as rooms and energy costs are included in the seminar fee.
BCA will provide adequate food to allow participants to fix their own breakfasts in the cottages. Lunches and evening meals other than the opening and closing banquets will be at the participants’ expense at local restaurants and pubs or self-catered in the cottages. The welcome reception on Saturday evening will be provided by the Burren College of Art, and the final banquet will be organized by BCA at the Whitethorn Restaurant.
The fee for participation in the seminar is €1,000 or $1,600.
Travel arrangements
Participants should plan to arrive in Ballyvaughan no later than 3PM on Saturday, 13 June. The nearest international airport is Shannon, about an hour’s drive south of Ballyvaughan. Transfer to and from Shannon airport and Ballyvaughan is included in the seminar fee, but participants may find it useful to rent a vehicle to do some sightseeing on their own when seminar sessions are not being held.
